FAQs

10kFriends…why did you start this project?

I started for several different reasons. Mainly I wanted to recapture the feeling of familiarity I had with those around me at Penn State and wanted a personal goal to work towards after graduation. A few other things: the idea of sonder, Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 Hours Theory, Admiral McRaven’s UT commencement speech, and my desire to sit with people for an hour for no reason to balance out the daily rejection from my sales job.

So 10,000 people in 10,000 hours…do you know how long this is going to take you?

I realize it’s a lofty goal and yes, I have done the math :). Currently my goal is to complete the project in 10 years. In order to do that, I’ll have to meet an average of 3 people per day over those 10 years. It took me 222 days to meet the first 100 people, but the more people know about it the busier my schedule becomes. For context, it took me about 4 months to meet the first 17 people and I now have 17 people lined up over the next 7 days (6/23/16-6/30/16).

Got it…so what’s the end goal?

I’m not sure. I always tell people the goal is to meet 10,000 different people. Once I do that, I feel like several opportunities could open up. Several of the people I’ve met with have suggested writing a book; some have suggested a documentary. As cliche as it sounds, I always say it’s more about the journey than the destination. We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Do you have certain criteria for the people you meet?

Nope, at this point I’m generally meeting with people who reach out to me so the only criteria is how easily our schedules line up. I do, however, meet new people because my friends are already my friends. Sometimes, I’ve met the person face-to-face in the past, but have not had the chance to sit down to get to know them.

I see most of your posts are from Philly…are you meeting everyone in Philadelphia or do you plan to travel?

Right now, I meet most people in Philadelphia as a result of me wanting to get to know my city and simply because of convenience. I’d love to travel the world some day and meet people from all over the place though. I’m not sure how it will pan out, but I’ve said it’d be cool to do the first 1,000 in Philly and the next 9,000 around the world. That way I could connect the people of Philadelphia with each other and the world.

I want to meet you!…how do I get in touch?

The best way to get in touch is to email me at robs10kfriends@gmail.com. I try to get back to everyone in a reasonable time frame, but may occasionally be overwhelmed. I’m my own administrative assistant so bear with me if you don’t hear from me in a couple of days and don’t be afraid to follow up.
